The principal task of Slovak Legal Metrology, n.o. (SLM) is the permanent provision of quality and available metrological services, assurance of the society requirements, consumers protection and guarantee of the precise and reliable production process on an adequate level for producers. This vision may be realised only under permanent monitoring of new trends in the metrological field, by an effective use of new and progressive testing and calibration methods, by bringing the workplaces up to date and by upgrading the equipments upon the up-to-date scientific and technological knowledge and findings.

The research and development section of the department of metrology concentrates its activities on the applied research, making use of the potential resulting out of practical skills, knowledge of praxis requirements and competency of professional staff surveying the quality of provided services.

Long-term strategy of research and development is focused on:

• new kinds of services provided,
• extension of current services,
• higher effectiveness of the provided services.

All activities are aimed to the development of:

• new equipment,
• testing procedures, calibration and verification of measuring instruments within the conformity assessment.

Since 2010 SLM is the holder of the certificate of competence for research and development, issued by Ministry for Education of the SR. The activities of the section for research and development are drafted in compliance with the long-term tendencies of the state science and technology policy that means that we enter into the state and European programs in an active manner in order to gain financial means from the structural funds of the operational program Research and development, or from the Agency for the research and development support, with the purpose to use these finances for some challenging solutions of the research and development tasks.

The functioning and effectiveness of the research and development section activities is assured by the internal system of the project management.
